I put my internet connection through another speed test at around 2AM tonight/this morning, so I thought I’d share my results. It’s important to note that these are power boost speeds, not my average speeds. Basically Cox only gives these speeds for about 30 seconds, after that you are back down to what you are paying for. In my case that would be 10mbs down and 2mbs up.
I’ve uploaded a couple hundred pictures to my Gallery, so go take a look. A bunch of the pictures are of my computers, but I think there are some of actual living people in there somewhere
Although it’s really not that great, here is the first English paper I’ve turned in during college. I’ll probably post a lot of college work on here so that I can reference it if I need to at a later date.

How High Speed Internet Connections Have Changed My Life
I was four years old when I first used a computer. It was a 486 (with turbo!) that ran Microsoft Windows 3.1. Ever since then I have been fascinated with computers and all things related to them. When I was in elementary school my parents ordered dial-up internet. For the first time I could communicate with other people using only a computer. In the 4th grade I didn’t really understand the full implications of what this new technology was allowing me to do, I simply thought that it was “really cool.” I began using a service called “AOL Instant Messenger” and was soon reading up on the latest technology news on informative websites. I didn’t know what all of it meant (there were lots of big words), but I found it fascinating. Read more…
I never knew how easy it was to host multiple websites on a single server. All you need is Apache2 and a text editor. Simply adding a couple of lines to a config file, making a new directory, and setting up your new domain name is all you have to do. Now that I know this I can host sites for my friends very efficiently. If you’re interested in the details of how to set something like this up for yourself, google is your friend
I’ve registered my name as a domain. I figure this way I can get some use out of my second IP address and maybe have a more professionally oriented website to put on a business card or something.
When I upgraded the main switch on the network in order to support multiple internet addressable web servers I noticed that whichever system I connected first could access the internet while the following ones couldn’t. I decided to call Cox’s support line to see what the proper procedure was for using multiple IP addresses. As it turns out the less-than-intelligent person who installed my modem did not set it up to use multiple IP addresses (nor did he know that I was receiving a business connection instead of a residential connection). The tech support agent figured the problem out and resolved the issue very quickly. I should have my secondary server up and running within a week.
If you administer linux boxes then you should check out Webmin. It’s an extremely usefull web interface that allows you to manage almost any setting on your linux systems remotely. i find that it works well for the servers that I have in my server closet that aren’t connected to my kvm. Granted you can do everything that webmin does with SSH, but sometimes it’s just more simple to use a gui. Give it a try if you’re intrested.
Due to popular request I have decided to re-install a gallery system onto my webserver so that friends can upload their pictures to my server. If you would like access to post pictures, let me know and I’ll hook you up.
