Control ATI Gaphics Cards Fan Speed in Ubuntu

My 4850×2 was running hotter than I am comfortable with under linux because the fan was set to the lowest speed. After a quick Google search I found a fourm talking about using aticonfig to solve the problem. As it turns out, the command is very simple:

aticonfig –pplib-cmd “set fanspeed 0 100″

where 0 is the card identifier and 100 is the % you want the fan speed to run at.

Speed Test

I put my internet connection through another speed test at around 2AM tonight/this morning, so I thought I’d share my results. It’s important to note that these are power boost speeds, not my average speeds. Basically Cox only gives these speeds for about 30 seconds, after that you are back down to what you are paying for. In my case that would be 10mbs down and 2mbs up.

Pretty Damn Fast

How Bittorrent Uploads Effect Response Times

As you most likely know, if you use bit torrent at it’s maximum speed, your internet connection seems to slow to a crawl for everything else. Web pages may fail to load, ping times shoot into the stratosphere, and tempers may rise from others trying to use the connection. But what level of traffic causes these issues? Is it simply because most of the internet connection is used, or do torrents increase ping times no matter what?. I decided to find out, and here are my results. Read more…
